New Works

There are times when a work has pulled ahead of me and goes on to become something new to me, something that I have never seen before; that is finishing in an exhilarating way.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.

Paul Marlow, Abstract IV. Infinity, Earth Allegory, 2022
Acrylic on canvas. 24 in. x 36 in.

Geometric Abstraction is a different visual language, and departure from my realist work. I started Abstract IV on Feb 23, a day before the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. I didn’t realize it at the time, but I may have been inspired by the colors of the Ukrainian flag, as I transitioned the color palette from shades of blues and greens to blues and yellow/golds. Painting in an abstract style has always been much more difficult for me. However, just as you can learn to speak a different language, why not learn to paint in a different style? Why not be a bi-lingual painter? It’s all about Learning a New Artistic Language.

Paul Marlow, Boy on a John Deere Model-B, 2022
(Plein Air at the Fair entry for the 2022 Iowa State Fair)
Acrylic and Oil on canvas. 18 in. x 24 in.

This painting was created in 7 hours on August 11, 2022 at the Iowa State Fair, as part of the Plein Air at the Fair competition. I started around 10:00 AM and finished at 5:00 PM. There were 13 artists painting at the fairgrounds on Thursday, with another 8 artists painting on Saturday, August 13, 2022. Visitors to the fair are able to vote for their favorite.
Another artist, Carlos from Iowa City, painted a different tractor about 30’ away from my location.

Acrylic on canvas. 18 in. x 24 in.

Early One Morning is my first repetition of the Cedar Rapids Bank & Trust Building, located at 500 1st Ave NE in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

This project was so successful that the client commissioned a second painting in 2022. Here is the serendipitous story about the CRB&T paintings…
